What is Orthostatic Tremor?

Orthostatic Tremor (OT) is a rare movement disorder characterised by a rapid, high-frequency tremor (13-18 Hz), mainly affecting the lower extremities and occasionally arms upon standing still, it occasionally affects the upper limbs and can be almost entirely relieved by walking, sitting or leaning on sturdy objects.

Testing with people with Orthostatic Tremor

This round of user testing focused on exploring the utility of a non-invasive stimulation device for the symptoms of Orthostatic Tremor.

Testing results

32 participants diagnosed with Orthostatic Tremor, took part in this user testing.

There was a range in the severity of their symptoms and progression. Outcomes included Maximal Stance Time (MST), Standing feet together (SFT)/ apart (SFA) and Tandem walking (TW). Measurements were taken at baseline, and repeated for a second time after a 20 minute acclimatisation period with the device attached on the volunteer’s sternum.

“CUE1 has given me part of my life back! It has improved my tolerance and energy, enabling me to cope better with everyday tasks and also giving me confidence to exercise more.”

Chris Cardus

“The Cue has been a real success, I feel like have been given part of my life back. I would have felt that it was a success if I was 5 – 10% improvement but it has been much better than that. Without the CUE1, I could stand at best 10-15 seconds but now I can manage at least 5 minutes. I can now walk about the house without needing to use the grab handles or furniture. My Family and friends have been amazed to see me and they have all said that I have gone back to how I was at least 8-10 years ago. Thank You Charco and also to Emaan for her patience and sensitive help.”

Nicola Foster

“I’ve had my Charco CUE 1 for a few weeks now and I’m really pleased. I’ve noticed some distinct improvements while wearing the device. These include finding it easier to stand in queues in shops and being able to walk down the stairs with a greater sense of balance. It’s very easy to take on and off. It’s also really easy to turn on and off, which I find I need to do quite often if I’m moving between spaces where it’s noisy and spaces where it’s totally silent. I’m so grateful for this small but powerful device in my life!

Anita Gale

“On holiday, I was able to wander around this beautiful garden on steep and uneven paths without hanging into my husband.

Overall,

this user testing highlights the potential of a non-invasive stimulation device as a treatment option for Orthostatic Tremor symptoms.

Further studies in a clinical setting are needed to uncover full benefits of using a non-invasive stimulation device in Orthostatic Tremor.
